January 24. “Button, what did you think of Bingo?”
“I liked the way the show started but after Paa went and the ordinary couples came in to play the game, it suddenly went kaput.”
January 23. “Did it feel nice when I lifted you up this morning to show you the pigeon wooing his mate?”
“Yes, I loved it when you carried me in your arms.”
January 22. “I read a very strange piece in the TOI a few days back. The whole article was in praise of idleness! Can you believe it?”
“And why not? When people were idle, they praised hard work and shoved it down our throats and, now that people are working 18-20 hours a day and killing themselves, they come out and say it’s no good working so hard.”
January 21. “Button, my younger daughter turned a year older today. That little tom-boy of mine has grown into a beautiful woman. Did you see my letter to her?”
“I have not read the letter but tell me briefly what it says.”
January 20. “I just finished putting the final touches to my letter to my younger daughter. You know it’s her birthday tomorrow.
What I also do every year on both theirs as well as Dost’s birthday is write a letter or whatever comes to mind.”
January 18. “Friend, I don’t like calling sir ‘sir’. Can we give him another name please?”
“I too have been thinking about it for some time. Do you have any names in mind?”
“What about… I don’t have a clue. Any suggestions?”
January 19. “Button, now that you know that Dost and I are in Goa, I want to tell you that they have given us the suite where the four of us stayed the last time the family was in Goa.
And this is the room which my daughters shared.”

January 17. “Button, ever since I started writing this diary, I’ve had doubts about whether I should continue to write or just give it up.
I am often stuck for ideas, not knowing what I should talk to you about but something or the other comes to mind and we’ve successfully talked for almost five months now.”
