Button, my frail old lady in the white tangail saris isn’t keeping too well.

You mean your mother who turned 90 and whose birthday you were all in the city of joy to celebrate?

That’s right. I’ve never seen her as lost as I saw her this time. She’s eating frugally too which doesn’t seem quite right. But she continues to help around the house to assist Rita, my sister, as much as she can and, even though she has a caretaker, continues to do her personal chores all by herself. She even made some tea for all of us when we were there the day before.

What if we never aged? Never turned old and frail? Never had a strand of grey hair or sagging skin? Never had to depend on others? Never had to leave this earth for for someplace alien? What if we had the option to simply press a button and go away whenever we chose to, wherever to chose to, in the prime of mental and physical health?

Without any doubt, that would have been wonderful. As the plane taking us back home took off, her small and weather-beaten face came floating in front of my eyes. Will I see that woman, full of zest and a never-say-die attitude towards life, in that condition again?
