Button, this year, Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year is not a word!
What is it then?
It’s a emoji pictograph. In other words, it is a symbol or, to make it simpler for you, a picture with an emotion.
What picture?
The picture is of a beaming face with tears of joy. These symbols/emojis/emoticons/pictures/icons are becoming a rich form of communication, sometimes even transcending linguistic borders.
That’s interesting. Does that mean that texting will slowly lose out to emoting pictures?
It’s quicker to say the least and tells a story in just a picture. The word emoji is a loan word from Japanese meaning “a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication.”
