Button, summer is at its peak and, plants like the bougainvillea, are blooming and showing off their fragile beauty to all and sundry.

I took a stroll in our garden this morning and noticed that almost all the plants are looking healthy and happy.

Why would you use the word “happy” to describe plants?

You have clicked the bougainvillea and pasted it on top! Don’t you think it is smiling and looking happy?

You’re right. Trees, plants and shrubs also have a life. Unknowingly, many-a-times, we rip off a flower or let plants lie in the scorching sun for days without watering them. Those plants also feel pain and die from carelessness on our part when we don’t water them. Those plants die an agonising death exactly the way humans, animals and birds die from neglect and from being unloved.

A lesson we all must learn and follow is to love and care for other living specimens that co-exist along with us.

What this country needs, apart from many other things, is a larger and a more thriving green cover. We are only focussing on construction and development but if we don’t pay attention to our ecology, we will face very tough times.

  Aren’t we already facing the consequences? Floods, birds and animals going extinct, changes in weather, increase as well as decrease in temperatures…just to name a few. Green covers, which are the lungs of cities are disappearing! Won’t cities choke to death because of this huge mistake on our part?

I didn’t knew that bougainvilleas had white flowers also…i knew only pink..

  Yes, bouganvilleas also have white flowers besides the pink ones. But I like the white variety more.

Plants also have emotions. I have an emotional connect with every tree in my building compound. I have given them names. The oldest one that has been there even before the building was made is called Devdas because he always looks so sad…the one with the golden leaves is called Dadaji because he is now drying up. i request everyone to take care of our greenery and contribute in enhancing it. This country really needs it.

  That’s so lovely. And, of-course, trees and plants are alive and very sensitive. Do you know that trees grow better if you play music to them? They also hurt when you don’t water them or pull out their leaves and flowers. I, too, have given names to some of the plants in our garden.

We may bitch America out but I salute them for the way their cities have been planned. The construction is proportionate to the greenery. And they really maintain by creating watering systems that are automatic. Not like here where we have to depend on gardeners turning up. They have so much open spaces, gardens, parks all for the citizens.

  I know. Foreign countries really take care of their flora and fauna thereby keeping their citizens’ interests in mind. Here, politicians come canvassing for votes prior to elections. Post elections, those promises are forgotten. How could they ever keep their voters’ interests in mind or have schemes to keep our flora and fauna thriving?

    I agree 100%…the citizens must come up with unique ways to do this…as a society we need to participate and contribute beyond our own gardens or community gardens..

      It’s happening slowly. Beaches are being cleaned up, saplings are being planted. Awareness about water wastage is being talked about but a lot more needs to be done by all of us, not by just a handful.
