“Button, you do remember Rani, don’t you? I mean I shouldn’t even be asking you this question! How can you forget Rani?
Well, one evening when my younger daughter and I were out feeding our other stray friends, we spotted a fragile-looking dog slowly trudging uphill. Both of us spotted her, parked the vehicle and, taking some food, rushed out in search of her. Since we didn’t spot her, we asked around and, to our surprise, discovered that she was our neighbour dog, very much loved by everyone in the locality, fed and cared for.
This Rani has joined our repertoire of strays we feed in the neighbourhood. She’s still fragile, walks falteringly but she’s there, nonetheless, to make us all feel responsible towards her. One of the ground floor apartments in the same locality has even opened up their verandah so she can go and rest on a mattress placed there by them.
Our Rani may have left us but we’ve found one more to remember her by though there is no similarity between them except for their names!”
