Button, Morparia’s cartoon on page 2 of today’s Mirror says it all.

Please tell me what it says.

See the cartoon first.  Do you know about the climate summit that is happening in Paris?

Not really.

Simply put, leaders from different countries have gathered in Paris to try and find a solution to climate change the world over and Morparia’s cartoon is telling us how we must consume less–be it food, clothes, vehicles, the latest gadgets…Consumption has gone through the roof and, unless we consume less of everything, this universe of ours will die.

But what about the swelling population? Isn’t more people=more consumption of everything?

No.  Where is the need to own 3 cell phones, 6 vehicles, 100 pairs of shoes, install a television in every room of your home, possess more clothes than you can wear in this lifetime! All of us are rushing forward somewhere–and we don’t know where–to be one with the crowd. To have that latest gadget, to be seen as well-clothed as the person next to us, to be spotted eating in the latest restaurant, to be noticed driving around in a swanky vehicle. And in that quest, we are, not slowly but rapidly, killing DHARTI. In other words, Mother Earth. And it’s sad to say the least. And scary. Very scary.

I now see your point. Ambition is not a bad thing but ambition and greed go hand-n-hand. How do you curb ambition?

By educating people not to be greedy. By teaching them that it is okay to repeat their clothes. That it’s wise to possess one cellphone, maybe share vehicles and not possess one vehicle each in the family. That it’s also alright not to discard their new iPad to go out and buy the latest one even though the previous one is practically new.

I get your point.
